Nigerian CV Format 2026: Sample, NYSC and What to Include

A Nigerian CV is a reverse-chronological document with contact details, a short profile, work experience, education with your degree class, NYSC status, professional certifications, skills and referees. Most private employers no longer need your date of birth, state of origin, religion or marital status. Your NYSC certificate or exemption status, however, is something every employer checks.

That NYSC line is the detail foreign CV guides miss. Section 12 of the NYSC Act makes it the duty of employers to demand the Certificate of National Service or an exemption certificate before employing a degree or HND holder, a requirement the NYSC restated to employers in 2023. This guide shows where it goes, what to cut, and a complete sample.

Nigerian CV at a Glance

ElementNigerian convention
NameCV (resume is understood)
SpellingBritish English (organise, programme, labour)
Phone+234 format for international applications (+234 803 123 4567)
PhotoOnly if the advert asks
Date of birth, state of origin, LGA, religion, marital statusLeave off for private-sector jobs; give them on forms that ask
NYSCAlways state it: completed (with year), exempted, or currently serving
DegreeName, institution, year and class (Second Class Upper, Upper Credit)
RefereesTwo or three with title, organisation, phone and email

The Sections, in Order

1. Contact details

CHIAMAKA OKONKWO
Lekki, Lagos | +234 803 123 4567 | chiamaka.okonkwo@email.com
linkedin.com/in/chiamakaokonkwo

Name, area and city, phone and a professional email address based on your name. A full home address is not needed.

2. Profile summary

Three or four lines on who you are and the value you bring:

ICAN-qualified accountant with six years in financial reporting for manufacturing and FMCG companies. Led the IFRS 16 lease adoption for a multi-site manufacturer and now owns month-end close. Seeking a financial controller role in Lagos.

Skip the old "Career Objective: to work in a challenging environment..." paragraph. It says nothing a recruiter can use.

3. Work experience

Most recent first: job title, company, city, month and year, then three to five bullets about results. Name the systems (SAP, Sage, Oracle), regulations (FIRS filings, PENCOM, IFRS) and outcomes that Nigerian recruiters look for.

4. Education

List your degree with its class, which Nigerian adverts often specify as a minimum:

  • University degrees: First Class, Second Class Upper (2:1), Second Class Lower (2:2), Third Class
  • HND: Distinction, Upper Credit, Lower Credit, Pass
B.Sc. Accounting, Second Class Upper, [University], Nsukka 2017

Your WAEC or NECO results matter mainly for graduate trainee programmes and jobs that ask for credits in English and Mathematics. Experienced candidates can drop them to one line or leave them off.

5. NYSC status

Give NYSC its own line under education:

NYSC: Completed, Batch B, 2018 (Primary assignment: [Company], Abuja)

Other honest versions: "NYSC: Exempted (certificate available)", or "NYSC: Currently serving, passing out in [month year]". Because employers must see your certificate or exemption before hiring a graduate, a missing NYSC line on a graduate's CV invites an immediate question. Use your primary assignment as work experience too if it was relevant to the job you want.

6. Professional certifications and memberships

Nigerian employers value professional bodies: ICAN or ACCA for accountants, CIPM for HR, COREN registration for engineers, NMCN licensure for nurses, CIBN for bankers. List the body, the designation and the year.

7. Skills

Group them: technical skills and software first, then soft skills shown through evidence rather than listed as adjectives.

8. Referees

Nigerian CVs commonly list two or three referees with title, organisation, phone and email: a current or former manager, and a lecturer or NYSC supervisor for graduates. Ask permission first, and tell them which jobs you have applied for. "Available on request" is also acceptable when you are protecting a current employer's confidentiality.

What to Cut From a Nigerian CV

Older Nigerian CV templates open with a "Personal Data" block. For private-sector applications, cut:

  • Date of birth and age. Some graduate trainee programmes have age limits and will ask on the form; answer it there.
  • State of origin and LGA. Government application portals often ask for them; private employers rarely need them on the CV.
  • Religion, marital status, gender, number of children, hometown.
  • NIN, BVN and bank details. Never put identity or bank numbers on a CV.

The Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023, signed in June 2023, created the Nigeria Data Protection Commission to oversee how organisations handle personal data. You don't need to mention it, but it is a good reason to keep sensitive details out of a document that recruiters forward and store.

Graduate Trainee CVs

For graduate trainee and management trainee programmes:

  1. Put education straight after the profile, with your class of degree.
  2. Add NYSC directly below it.
  3. Treat SIWES (industrial training), the NYSC primary assignment, internships and campus leadership as experience entries with bullets.
  4. Keep it short: recruiters screening a large graduate intake read the first page closely and skim the rest.
  5. Expect aptitude tests. Your CV gets you to the test; specific achievements get you through the interview.

Common Mistakes on Nigerian CVs

  1. A personal data block with date of birth, state of origin, religion and marital status on a private-sector CV.
  2. No NYSC line on a graduate's CV.
  3. Degree with no class, when the advert sets a minimum.
  4. An objective statement instead of a profile summary.
  5. Referees who don't know they are referees.
  6. NIN, BVN or bank details anywhere on the CV.

What is the best CV format in Nigeria?

A reverse-chronological CV with contact details, a profile summary, work experience with results, education with your degree class, NYSC status, professional certifications, skills and two or three referees. Leave personal details such as date of birth, state of origin and religion off private-sector CVs.

Should I include NYSC on my CV?

Yes. Section 12 of the NYSC Act requires employers to demand the Certificate of National Service or an exemption certificate before employing a degree or HND holder, so state your status clearly: completed with the year, exempted, or currently serving.

Should I include state of origin on my CV in Nigeria?

Not on a private-sector CV. It does not help you get shortlisted. Government application portals and some graduate programmes ask for state of origin and local government area on their forms; give it there.

How many referees should a Nigerian CV have?

Two or three, usually a current or former manager plus a lecturer or NYSC supervisor for recent graduates. Give each referee's title, organisation, phone and email, and ask their permission before you list them.

How long should a CV be in Nigeria?

Long enough to show the experience that matters for this job and no longer. Graduates should keep it brief and put education, NYSC and internships up front; experienced professionals should summarise older roles in a line each so recent results stay on the first page.
