Malaysia Resume Format 2026: Sections, Rules and Sample

The Malaysian resume format is a reverse-chronological resume with contact details, a short summary, work experience, education (CGPA, plus SPM or STPM early in your career), skills, languages with your MUET band, and references. A photo is common but optional. Leave off your IC number, race, religion and marital status, and give expected salary on the form, not the resume.

Malaysian resumes are in transition. Many templates still carry a "Personal Details" box with IC number, age, race and religion, while multinational and GLC recruiters increasingly expect the lean international format. This guide shows the modern Malaysian format, what to keep from the local tradition, and a complete sample.

What to Leave Out, and Why

Your IC number. A MyKad number starts with your date of birth and also identifies your state of birth, so it reveals your age before anyone has read your experience. It is also the key to your identity for banks and government services. Malaysia's Personal Data Protection Act 2010 (Act 709) governs how organisations process personal data in commercial transactions, which is a good reason not to scatter your IC number across every recruiter's inbox. Give it when an employer needs it for the offer, background check or EPF and SOCSO registration.

Race, religion, marital status and age. They don't help a recruiter shortlist you, and they invite bias. Section 69F of the Employment Act 1955, added by the 2022 amendments, lets the Director General of Labour "inquire into and decide any dispute between an employee and his employer in respect of any matter relating to discrimination in employment" (updated text by the Attorney General's Chambers, as at 1 January 2023, published by the Labour Department). Hiring on merit is the expectation, and a merit-only resume fits it.

The photo. Many Malaysian employers still accept or expect a small professional photo, so it is not a mistake to include one for local companies. For multinationals and roles abroad, leave it off.

2. Summary

Three or four lines: your role, years of experience, domain and one result.

Digital marketing executive with four years in e-commerce for consumer brands. Runs Shopee and Lazada campaigns and paid social for a skincare brand, and rebuilt its monthly reporting in Looker Studio. Looking for a senior digital marketing role in FMCG.

3. Work experience

Most recent first: job title, company, city, month and year, then three to five bullets with results. Name Malaysian platforms and systems where relevant (Shopee, Lazada, SQL Account, AutoCount, SAP).

4. Education

Bachelor of Business Administration (Hons) Marketing, [University]   2021
CGPA 3.52/4.00
STPM, 2017: 3A 1B  (fresh graduates only)
SPM, 2015: 8A      (fresh graduates only)

Give CGPA with its scale. SPM and STPM results matter for fresh graduates and roles that ask for them; experienced candidates can drop them.

5. Languages and MUET

Malaysian employers value languages, so list each one you can work in with a level: "Bahasa Malaysia (native), English (fluent), Mandarin (conversational)". If you took the Malaysian University English Test, give your band ("MUET Band 4.0"). Universities such as UKM publish tables that map MUET bands to CEFR levels, which helps international employers read your result.

6. Skills and certifications

Tools and certifications in the job ad's words: Google Ads, Meta Blueprint, HRD Corp-claimable courses, professional bodies (MIA for accountants, BEM registration for engineers, MBOT for technologists).

7. References

Two referees with title, company, phone and email, or "Available upon request". Ask permission first.

Fresh Graduate Resumes

For fresh graduates, flip the order: education straight after the summary, then internship (latihan industri), final year project, part-time work and co-curricular leadership. Keep it short, include CGPA and SPM or STPM results, and turn each activity into a bullet with a result. Expected Salary

Job portals and application forms in Malaysia almost always have a field for current and expected salary, and recruiters raise it in the first call. That field is the right place for it. On the resume, the number only limits your negotiation if the file is forwarded to a hiring manager with a different budget in mind. Research the range for your role before the call, and quote a range, not a single figure.

Common Mistakes on Malaysian Resumes

1. A personal details box with IC number, race, religion and marital status.
2. Expected salary on the resume instead of the form.
3. CGPA without the scale, or SPM results on an experienced candidate's resume.
4. A casual photo. If you include one, make it a recent, professional headshot.
5. Duties instead of results.
6. Only one language listed when you work in two or three.
