How to write a resignation letter
A resignation letter is a short written notice that you are leaving a job and when. It does not need a reason, a story or an apology. It needs five things:
- A clear statement that you are resigning, and from which position.
- Your last working day, counted from the date you hand the letter in.
- An offer to help with the handover.
- A line of thanks.
- Your name, signed off politely.
Keep it to one page. Employers file it, and a calm, specific letter is what a future reference check will remember. Once you have resigned, update your resume and write your next cover letter while the details are fresh.
What not to put in it
- Vent about your manager, your pay or the team. The letter goes in your file.
- Name the company you are joining unless you want to. You owe no details.
- Threaten, bargain or hint that a counteroffer could change your mind.
- Skip the date. A clear last working day protects your final pay and your reference.
- Send it before you have told your manager, if you can tell them in person first.
